Children: Constipation, Anal Pain and When Parents Should Seek Help

Parent-friendly guidance on stool habits, fissure-like pain, bleeding and warning signs in children.

Children with hard stools may develop pain during bowel movement and sometimes small streaks of bright red blood. Increasing fluids, fibre-rich foods and regular toilet timing may help.

Do not give adult laxatives, antibiotic creams or strong pain medicines without a pediatrician's advice. Repeated bleeding, weight loss, fever, severe abdominal pain or persistent constipation needs medical review.

If the child starts withholding stool because of fear of pain, early care can prevent a longer constipation cycle.
